A confession, an update

A confession, an update

First, a confession.

I wrote a whole blog post about letting go and in that blog post, I used the illustration of hanging onto your Christmas tree for too long. I knew when I wrote it that it was a really bad idea to use that analogy because I adored our Christmas tree this year.

Which is why I am currently sitting on the couch, starring at our Christmas tree… on January 28th. She’s been camped out in the living room for nearly two entire months and is looking more and more like a shriveled up tree ghost every day.… Continue reading

Hinterland, Week Thirteen: Letting go

Hinterland, Week Thirteen: Letting go

Here we are at the very end of 2017.

I’m not great at embracing change, and I’m especially bad at endings, so you can imagine how much I dislike transitioning from one year to the next. I usually cling to the last few days of a year as if they were the last drops of water at the bottom of a barrel in the middle of the desert. But along with 99% of the world’s population, I will not be sorry to see 2017 come to an end today. Bye, Felicia. Don’t let the door hit you on the way … Continue reading

Hinterland, Week Twelve: Christmas with a real camera

Hinterland, Week Twelve: Christmas with a real camera

I’m sitting here at 10:30pm watching the Packers play a meaningless game—and it’s not even a preseason game. This has not happened in probably close to a decade because the Packers haven’t been this bad in probably close to a decade. This does not make me feel jolly. But you know what does make me feel jolly? The Great British Baking Show, which my mom and I just started watching today because of The Hype and now I totally understand The Hype.

“Jolly” is only the correct word to use when it’s two days until Christmas. At any other … Continue reading

Hinterland, Week Nine: Have a Mary Christmas

Hinterland, Week Nine: Have a Mary Christmas

Remember back in October when I said I wanted to chill the heck out and enjoy November? It took most of the month, but it really did happen last week. Not surprisingly, it happened on its own terms after I had mostly forgotten about it, and long after I tried to make it happen myself.

(Isn’t that true about all of the things, all of the time?)

There were several factors that made last week so enjoyable, but one of the nicest parts was that it didn’t feel rushed. It usually feels like December arrives before the apple pie … Continue reading

Christmas Videos and Unlikely Touchdowns

Christmas Videos and Unlikely Touchdowns

Below is our family Christmas video.

It looks shockingly similar to last year’s Christmas video, mostly because we are creatures of habit around here. We have breakfast, give presents, watch Christmas movies, make a big lunch/dinner, and watch more Christmas movies. It’s a finely tuned system in which we laugh/eat/laugh again/eat again, and the whole sequence takes place in comfy clothes by the fireside. So it’s really no wonder why we don’t change anything.

One more Christmas item checked off the list!

In other news, the Packers won a win-and-you’re-in game yesterday against the division rival Bears. This was … Continue reading

Non-News Flash : A Christmas Bucket List Update

Non-News Flash : A Christmas Bucket List Update

Things that have happened:

1. I (re)made fudge!

Fudge

The first time was a fail. Too thick, and terrible impulse decision making (don’t put whole caramels in fudge). The second time was better, but I overcompensated. The fudge wasn’t quite thick enough to set all the way and the caramel sauce I made was a little too thin. But really, we’re talking about a mixture of sugar and chocolate and sugar. There is no bad in that.

2. I took real pictures!

3. I sent Christmas cards!

I have to tell you that Red Stamp saved me from sending out … Continue reading

A Mini Christmas Bucket List

A Mini Christmas Bucket List

Christmas 2013 Collage

I love Christmas like no other. And this Christmas is rushing past like no other. So I’m preventing January from arriving unannounced and sans yuletide cheer with a little Christmas to-do list!

1. Send Christmas Cards

I love sending Christmas cards and gifts. Like, loooooove it. But this year, I’m going to looooooove getting anything out in the mail. At all. Because this Christmas is less wrapped-with-love-and-twine and more Lightning-Round-GO!  So if you do not receive any sort of Christmas greeting from me this year…you’ll know that I failed on this initiative. And know that I wish you a Merry … Continue reading
