A Mighty Fortress

A Mighty Fortress

A mighty fortress

Yesterday was a brokenhearted day. Friends of our family lost their son and brother, a State Trooper with a wife and two little boys. The hymn “A Mighty Fortress” was on my heart for them yesterday morning and has been ever since. The lyrics are so powerful and so true. They feel especially poignant after a sad day like yesterday.

A mighty fortress is our God
A bulwark never failing
Our helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe
His craft and pow’r are great
And armed with cruel hate
On earth is not his equal

If we in our own strength confide
Our striving would be losing
Were not the right Man on our side
The Man of God’s own choosing
You ask who that may be
Christ Jesus it is He
The Lord of Hosts His name
From age to age the same
And He must win the battle

And tho’ this world with devils filled
Should threaten to undo us
We will not fear for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us

This world – broken with sin and tragedy and death – threatens to undo us. But we know the truth. And we will not fear, for God has willed His truth to triumph through us.

If you don’t know the truth about Jesus, please take a moment to find out. And if you could, please lift the Cunniff family up in prayer over the days and weeks to come. They are wonderful, loving, special people who shine so brightly for the Lord.
